The chain-thread strands fall freely down. Unlike in the group of works "net thread" the yarn is white all over. The net-like meshes are knotted or braided and then sprayed with Indian ink. Manchmal, wenn ich im Hotel in Balbec an meinem Fenster hinausschaute, während Francoise die Decken fortnahm, die das Licht abwehren sollten, oder abends, während ich den Augenblick erwartete, da ich mit Saint Loup losfahren würde, war es vorgekommen, dass ich aufgrund eines Lichteffekts einen dunklen Teil des Meeres für eine ferne Küste hielt oder voller Freude eine blaue, verfliesste Zone betrachtete, ohne zu wissen, ob sie noch Meer oder schon Himmel war. Sehr schnell stellte mein Verstand dann zwischen den Elementen die Trennung wieder her, die meinen Sinneseindruck ausgeschaltet hatte." M. Proust
